Overview#
If you've got kids into sports, you've probably heard of apps like Homecourt that use the iPad camera to analyse movement and provide feedback during training. My son's been using it for basketball practice, and it's been brilliant for gamifying those repetitive dribbling and shooting drills while tracking his progress.
The catch? The iPad needs to be positioned just right to capture all the action. We'd been propping it up against water bottles and various other jury-rigged contraptions with mixed success. After one too many iPad crashes to the floor, I decided it was time for a proper stand.
Finding the Right Angle#
Rather than buying something, it was time to fire up the 3d printer so I scanned to Printables to see what was already available. I found AxField's excellent Large iPad Stand which had a great hex design that looked sturdy enough for our needs.
After printing it, though, I realized it held the iPad at too shallow an angle for our purposes. For the Homecourt app to properly track movements, we needed the iPad almost vertical to get a good view of the full practice area.
Remixing for the Perfect Stand#
Thanks to AxField generously sharing the STEP file of the original design (check out his other great designs on Printables too!), I was able to remodel it in Fusion 360, changing the angle to a much steeper 80 degrees. This new angle is perfect for monitoring activities where you need a wider field of view and maintains the original's strength and stability while accommodating larger iPad cases.
Print your own or remix it further. You can grab it from my Printables page
